Fitness - Different Exercise Routines For Men And Women

We live quite rightly in an age of equality where we are slowly but surely tearing down many of the traditional barriers that exist between men and women. Despite this though, there are still some areas where differences do, and will continue to, exist and exercise is one such area.

Although a few women can achieve the upper body strength of some of even the fittest men, the vast majority of men have a natural physical advantage in this area. This advantage is reinforced by male aesthetic values and many men will favor their upper body when it comes to putting together an exercise routine.

Women, by contrast, will focus their attention more on exercises aimed at the legs and buttocks, possibly in part out of a desire to look more attractive. In this case women again have an advantage as a woman's pelvis is tilted at a slightly different angle from that of a man. This means, for example, that women can gain greater benefit from exercises such as squats by tilting their feet outward with their legs further apart, and do not need to squat as low.

Although women have additional layers of muscle in the stomach, on average, most women have less muscle mass than men and a greater percentage of body fat. This means that a well designed female exercise routine will focus less on bulking up and more on toning and achieving flexibility.

Men are also somewhat less flexible than women as a result of natural differences in their joints and also a difference in attitude. This difference in attitude often results in men tending to skimp on their warm-up routines, including essential stretching exercises.

Of course to some extent these differences are very much a matter of degree and some convergence is possible and both men and women can benefit by adapting some aspects of the routines of the opposite sex.

Women are more often open to trying out something new or different, such as yoga or pilates, which focus on an awareness of different parts of the body in order to maximize flexibility and raise overall fitness. Such practices focus very little on achieving strength, although increased strength often results a good yoga or pilates routine.

For example, a number of yoga routines focus on balance and balance is at its greatest when all the body's muscles are supporting the joints and skeleton correctly and dynamically. This is both the cause and consequence of improved strength in the muscles that help achieve that balance.

Pilates, especially, is a coordinated system aimed at achieving better strength and posture and breathing by using one to assist the other. Once again, it concentrates more on controlling muscle groups rather than building them up.

While men will undoubtedly continue to focus their attention on upper body strength and women to concentrating on flexibility and toning in their legs, both can undoubtedly benefit from taking a look over the fence and seeing how the other half lives.

Increase of Extreme Weather Due to Global Warming

Global warming is one of the most dangerous challenges that all of humanity has ever faced. Its multiple effects will cause disruptions in everything from natural habitat to drinking water and food supply. And even more dangerously, it will give birth to some of the most powerful natural disasters ever known to mankind.

In 2004, the Tsunami in asia displayed an unforgiving act of nature. Less than a year later, across continents in the United States, Hurricane Katrina delivered a blow of equal magnitude. Both the disasters caused massive humanitarian crisis, effecting hundreds of thousands of lives. These might not have been directly caused by global warming, but it certainly paints a picture of thing to come.

In India, the speed of cyclones in the Andra Pradesh region has jumped from an average of 150 kilometres per hours to 250 kph within just six years! And while some cities are at a risk of being washed out, other are at the risk of drying up.

Global warming will cause parts of the world to be very fertile for a period of time but simultaneously, it will also cause droughts in other parts. Scientists have estimated that as much as half a million people in asia could face starvation within the next 30-40 years at this rate.

But its not just these devastating disasters that hint towards whats happening with our weather. Summers are becoming hotter by the year, and this winter Ski resorts in Central America, Europe and the United States all lost business because it just hadnt snowed like it used to even last year! For the first time in over a hundred years, Central Park in New york saw no snow in December 2006.

With global warming, extreme weather or freak weather is becoming a part of daily life. June and July alone has witnessed massive floods in the UK and parts of the United States, while in other parts of the United States heat has caused dangerous forest fires. And this week, the west coast is expected to hit temperatures in triple digits!

There is little argument that global warming is real and it causes changes in our weather pattern. Every week, scientists find more startling and disturbing evidence to support this fact. And the scientific community is trying everything from simple steps to cut carbon emission en masse, to designing colossal artificial air purifiers for earth. This time, its for the sake of our planet.

CE Marking Electronic Products

All electronic products sold within the European Union are required to be CE Marked. However I find that there is a large amount of confusion and misunderstanding, with people struggling to find what is required of their product.

The legal responsibility for compliance with the CE mark remains with the company that either owns the manufacturing rights for the product, or imports it into the EU. It is not possible to "outsource" this legal responsibility to a third party. Test and compliance houses can provide third party validation that a product has been produced and tested against the required standards. Test houses can also advise on the standards against a specific product should be tested, bear in mind that it is ultimately you who has responsibility for compliance so some research and general understanding is advisable.

From the UK Department of Trade guidelines on CE marking a definition of for CE marking is "a declaration by the manufacturer that the product meets all the appropriate provisions of the relevant legislation implementing certain European Directives".

Typical areas covered by the legislation are EMC, EMI, Safety and Environmental laws. EMC - The unwanted Electromagnetic energy generated by your product. There are normally limits for both conducted and radiated emissions. EMI - The ability of your equipment to withstand electromagnetic interference from other sources without malfunctioning or interrupting its normal operation. ESD - Electrostatic Discharge testing involves testing the ability of your equipment to withstand the high voltages that occur when static discharges occur. A typical source of ESD is when a person walks on a carpet, generating a few thousand volts of potential. Safety - Safety testing can cover the electrical, mechanical and fire related safety tests. Environmental - The most well known environmental legislation is the RoHS directive covering hazardous substances such as lead, however there is also the WEEE directive covering end of life disposal. An up coming piece of legislation is the Energy Using Products directive which will come into force in the near future.

In addition to the areas outlined previously, some products such as wireless equipment are required to meet specific legislation, with testing required by an authorised body or so called "notified body". A common misconception is that ISM or so called "license free" radios do not require type approval testing - this is not true. As this testing can be expensive it is wise to research the costs prior to commencing a development, as it can effect the direction you take. For example it is possible to buy pre-approved modules, removing the burden of type approvals.equipment that does not require testing by a notified body can be self certified.

A "technical construction file" should be created. The TCF contains all the technical details of the product, including assessments of legislative compliance with test reports from the appropriate test houses or internal testing.

In addition to the legal requirements you may wish to or are contractually required to test and comply with industry or military standards, such USB, Bluetooth, IP ratings, MIL810 etc. It is important to remember that while these may add a level of credibility to a product they can incur large costs. In a similar manner to type approvals it is wise to get preliminary costing for the approvals phase. While these voluntary standards add credibility to a product, they will have an impact on the unit cost of your product.
